A blend of Cinsault, Syrah, Carignan and Grenache from one of the best natural winemakers around. Bursting with vibrant fruit up front followed by a long savoury finish.
Jeff Coutelou
Mas Coutelou is in Puimission, a village just north of Beziers in the Languedoc . Jeff is the fourth generation of his family to take over the domaine. Prior to 1987 the winery had 20ha of conventionally farmed vines – according to Jeff the wines were rigid and over extracted.
In 1987 he decided to begin taking a step back, using organic remedies only when necessary. Nowadays the vineyard is made up of 13ha of separate parcels of traditional Languedoc varieties and some long forgotten selection massale varieties. His soils are varied but predominantly chalky / clay.
Any areas that had been compromised by conventional farming are now made up of olive trees, shrubs and protective hedges. All of the work is done manually, there is careful attention to biodiversity and reducing the impact on local ecosystems. Vinification methods and vessels vary depending on the vintage and varietal in order to promote the purest expression of each. He is surrounded by farmers that sell grapes to co-ops and his unique story was told in the Netflix film Rotten : Reign of Terroir.
