Donovan Rall is one of the key figures in South Africa’s explosive New Wave movement. One of the original “garagista” producers in the Swartland, Donovan can now proudly say that he makes some of the most highly sought-after wines in the country. Donovan struck out on his own in 2008 and he has not looked back, still buying up small parcels of top-quality fruit, contracting vineyards, and strengthening his reputation as a master blender. Over time he has fine-tuned his own winemaking style towards fresher, more vivid wines, and the wines have never looked better. Fermentations are natural and spontaneous with no interventions, and aging takes place in various vessels including concrete, cask and amphora depending on the variety. 

The straight Cinsault is a great example of Donovan’s intuitive and adaptive approach to winemaking. His Cinsault shows that when picked early and extracted softly, it can be really delicious variety with enough substance to stand on its own. From two parcels, one in the Swartland and one in Darling, the Swartland component brings structure and Darling all the perfume. Whole bunch fermentation on the Darling and 50% on the Swartland, the 2021 maintains an understated fine fruit profile with lifted red fruits of red cherry and strawberry. Aged half in old barrels (Darling) and half in concrete (Swartland), bottled after around six months to maintain freshness. Aromas of rose petals, raspberries, and soft spices, complemented by crunchy red cherry flavors, a lively acidity, and a powdery, food-friendly finish
